Today, March 8th, marks International Women’s Day 2022, a day that celebrates the achievements of women, raises awareness of gender equality and fundraises for women’s charities. And SBFM will be joining in the festivities with a host of insights and activities taking place throughout March.

At SBFM, we’ve got strong and talented women everywhere: embodied in our customers and partners, reflected in the thousands of women among our ranks, and formalised in our most senior executives, including Katie Westerman, Group Sales & Marketing Director; Helen Nicholson, HR Manager; and Zoe Tunstall, Corporate Operations Director, to name just a few.

Our continued success is driven by our brilliant female colleagues who work tirelessly across all departments to deliver the standards we have become renowned for. That’s why we are kicking things off with a day of celebration in SBFM HQ to commemorate the impact that our co-workers are having on the FM and commercial cleaning industry.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Action is needed to level the playing field.

As part of this we will be joining the global movement and participating in the official IWD 2022 social media campaign. We’re asking colleagues across the business, as well as our partners, customers and followers to join us by sharing a photo of themselves striking the IWD 2022 pose by crossing their arms to show solidarity.

Throughout March, we will also be shining a light on the ways SBFM continue to produce a culture that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, and an environment where difference is valued and celebrated.

We’ll be posting and sharing interesting and inspiring stories about women breaking down barriers and biases in our industry. We will be hosting a series of interviews with our female colleagues who continue to #BreakTheBias and achieve great things while working in senior roles at SBFM. Keep an eye on our page to learn all about those talented individuals.

Supporting gender equality all year round

As a forward-thinking business, and a leader in our industry, we are continually seeking ways to diversify our workforce and promote an inclusive and diverse culture. A fundamental part of this is a dedication to the advancement and retention of women at all levels of the business and wider FM industry.

Considerable attention, time and resources has been directed towards the number of women in executive positions. As a result, we have seen a growth in the percentage of women at director and senior management level across all departments and regions of the UK-wide SBFM business.

As a company our commitment to gender diversity begins from the outset and is carried throughout all employee’s career paths. Diverse hiring standards – underpinned by our Equal Opportunities Policy – ensure we recruit a broader range of candidates. While we work tirelessly to eliminate unlawful discrimination in all aspects of employment including recruitment, promotion, opportunities for training, pay and benefits.

We provide equal access to training and career-development opportunities for staff in every role – whether that is corporate training course, mentoring or career progression programs.

Though we pay particular attention to providing suitably qualified and experienced staff for every position, we understand that a lack of experience should not be a barrier to employment. We are confident that we can recruit, train and develop our team members, and give them the skills and confidence to become valuable and valued team members.

SBFM HR Manager, Helen Nicholson, said: “At SBFM, we are proud of the progress we have made so far when it comes to promoting gender equality and diversity throughout our workforce, and International Women’s Day offers an opportunity to celebrate those who make the business the success it is today.

“As a business we remain committed to accelerating representation of and opportunities for women at all levels across our company. However, we all have a responsibility to tackle bias in the workplace, and create an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, is not only comfortable but also feel encouraged to perform to the best of their abilities in whatever role they hold.”
