In 2021, it is unsurprising that there has been an increased demand for higher hygiene standards in the workplace. We have been working tirelessly with our clients reviewing the latest products to determine the most effective approach. We consistently re-evaluate these products, comparing them to products new to the market. For this article, we thought it might be insightful to list some of the obvious and perhaps not so obvious unhygienic places in the workspace. We’ll also discuss how SBFM enhances workplace hygiene, and our recommendations of the best products to use in those areas.

Elevator Buttons Panel

Consider how many people press the ‘up’ or ‘down’ buttons daily… a lot, so as expected, they tend to have more germs than other places. However, unless they are cleaned after every use, then it is unlikely that these areas will be hygienic for long. We have found and tested an advanced surface sanitiser by a brand called Zoono, which can sanitise and protect up to 30 days dependent on the number of employees.

For the scientifically minded that want to know how Zoono works; it is the formation of a molecular layer of covalently bound biocidal molecules. Antimicrobial ‘spikes’ are formed on the surface that is highly positively charged and as a result, the negatively charged molecular structure of microorganisms are attracted to the ‘spikes’ and the cell wall and membrane are lysed; the organism is then killed, and the process continues. In other words, this non-toxic chemical attracts the bacteria and destroys them when it comes into contact. This results in keeping the elevator panel hygienic and your staff safe. Thus far, this has been the most effective product we have found in terms of sanitising your elevator panels and other communal touch point areas.

Desks and Worktops

Studies have shown that the desk is one of the most unhygienic areas in the whole office, it has been reported to have approximately 400 times more germs than a toilet seat. That is the equivalent of 21,000 bacteria, viruses, and fungi per square inch. Therefore, while we do recommend regular hand washing, we also recommend introducing an individual responsibility for everyone’s personal area. Meaning providing anti-bacterial wipes at everyone’s workstation and encouraging staff to regularly wipe their desks. Since implementing this process within a multitude of our client’s workspace. It has been reported that there has been a significant reduction in the number of sick days requested by staff over one year. The usual common practice, we found, is that most organisations tend to only have clean desks on the days cleaning operatives are in. Therefore, to increase the hygiene standard for your organisation we could not recommend this procedure more.

An alternative product to Zoono we recommend is Duo Max, which while doesn’t last as long has been proven to be 99.9% effective as it has been lab-tested and is guaranteed to kill covid. The best part is that it requires no need for PPE as it is non-toxic and no-corrosive, equally environmentally friendly. These products are a no brainer.

Sinks

Sinks attract bacteria and other germs due to the large diversity of hands and food that tend to enter it. In fact, in most cases, bathroom sinks carry more germs than the toilets! The part you touch the most – the faucet handle – often has the most. Because everyone touches it. One product which we recommend is Biohygiene – an all-purpose sanitiser. Biohygiene gets to work in 15 seconds, and the unfragranced option means it is food-safe. Biohygiene is also proven to effectively kill the covid19 virus. Not only is it an effective product to use, but it also is great for the environment. It’s 100% non-single-use plastic and is 100% biodegradable and would you believe, manufactured in the UK.

Here at SBFM, sustainability is just as important to us as the effectiveness of the product. We do not recommend products that can be harmful to the environment. We are also consistently seeking new ways in which we can improve our carbon footprint by introducing environmentally friendly products.
