We’re proud to spotlight Brian Carter, one of our incredible colleagues working in our Leisure & Hospitality Division. Since joining in 2023, Brian has brought positivity, dedication, and a real sense of purpose to his role – on top of an inspiring story of giving back, staying curious, and always striving to make a difference. Get to know more about Brian below, in his own words.
Hi Brian! Please tell us about yourself and your background.
My career path has been diverse, starting with my entry into the workforce through a Youth Training Scheme in retail. From there, I moved into Employment Services at the Department for Work and Pensions, helping people navigate the benefits system. After that, I spent ten years at Royal Mail as a postman in the sorting office. For over 20 years, I then worked at the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England providing student support and wellbeing services. This role ultimately led me to reconsider my own wellbeing, and that’s how I arrived at my current cleaning operative position. Although cleaning might seem like an unconventional choice given my experience, it’s the only job where I feel truly satisfied. I take pride in leaving each station in a state I’d be happy with myself. It’s a role where I have full responsibility for the outcome, and when I finish, I feel a sense of achievement.
Where are you from?
I’m born and raised in Bristol, and currently live just outside the city in South Gloucestershire – about 300 meters from the Bristol boundary. While I love being close to family, I’ve always dreamed of living abroad in Europe.
What’s it like working in your role?
My role is hands-on, and while it can get messy, I truly enjoy it. Thursdays are the busiest days due to the site’s schedule, but I’m proud to make a difference and complete my work with a sense of accomplishment. Despite the challenges, it’s a job that gives me real satisfaction.
What’s a hobby or passion you’re really enthusiastic about?
I’m a lifelong sufferer of Bristol Rovers, and watching the games with my brother is something I truly enjoy. Alongside football, I’m passionate about using fitness to support charitable causes. Over the years, I’ve raised £6,000 by taking on various challenges. One of the most memorable was walking a 10-mile round trip to work every day for a month to raise funds for multiple charities. I also took part in “Meatless March,” giving up meat for the entire month to support plant-based living and raise awareness for environmental issues. These efforts have supported charities such as Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research, and Endometriosis UK.
I also love pushing myself outside my comfort zone with challenges like skydiving from 15,000 feet – something my wife still calls “nuts!” These experiences have not only raised money for important causes, but also helped me connect with others and encourage them to get involved. Giving back is a huge part of who I am, and I’m always looking for new ways to contribute to causes close to my heart.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
My dad always told me to trust my judgment and instincts, and this has helped guide me throughout my career. I’ve also had a former manager tell me to “stay curious” but to also “don’t be afraid to act” – that’s been invaluable advice.
What’s your favourite part of working at SBFM?
I love the sense of responsibility that comes with my role at SBFM. Being relied upon for my work is something I value deeply, and I take pride in the work I do to ensure everything is completed to the highest standard.
If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
I’m passionate about tackling global issues like poverty and inequality. If I could change one thing, it would be to eradicate these problems.
Do you have a life lesson or favourite quote that sticks with you?
My advice to others would be to stay open-minded, embrace new ideas, and continuously grow. There’s always room to learn more and to develop new skills, especially in the workplace.
Holidays and future plans?
I’m looking forward to spending a week in Tenerife and plan to take a couple of weeks off during the later summer too. Just before Christmas, I was lucky enough to visit Lanzarote, which was the perfect opportunity to recharge.
From charitable fundraising to everyday excellence in his role, Brian’s story is a brilliant reminder of the passion and integrity that so many of our colleagues bring to work every day. We’re proud to have him as part of the SBFM team!
